Giresun Island

Giresun Adası Giresun Island, one mile away form the land, is the only island in the East Black Sea region that is habitable by people. According to one of the legends, this island was formed by a piece that separated from Gedikkaya which resembles the beak of an eagle and is situated to the south east of the city. The island is about 40,000 square meters. There are ancient remains of walls in this island which is visited by the city and the surrounding villages' habitants frequently. It is understood from these remains that the island used to be encircled by a fortress. The masonry of the fortress bears the same workmanship of Giresun Fort’s. The most realistic probability is that it belongs to the Pontus Period. The most striking ancient remains would be the two large wine barrels, remains of a temple and worship place, walls of the island and the observing tower. The stalagmite found at the east end of the island named “Hamza Stone” is a remain from the Classical Era. It has been a mystical source of strength for the locals for many centuries.
